She’s new, she’s sensational, she’s Onome Aberare and she bring to you her queendom in the “Queen Don Come (EP).”
Many artists struggle to establish their musical identity, laboriously trying on different musical styles like a piece of clothing, looking to find what fits but there are others that emerge fully formed, in full command of their craft, their identity and their music; Onome Aberare fits firmly in the latter category. Her new EP, “Queen Don Come,” is a captivating and moving debut that heralds the arrival of a gifted and significant new talent – a Delta/Yoruba girl who grew up in Lagos, she played piano as a child, but didn’t take music seriously until she was in her early 20‘s – adapted to a lot of 80‘s blues, introduced to her by her mom who was a huge Celine Dion fan, she naturally gravitates to that kind of sound, but with the evolution of music in the coming years, she has found ways to merge the new with the old, creating a collage with music.
From the opening notes of “Farawe,” the EP‘s 1st single, one hears that combination of melodic irresistibility and lyrical incisiveness that is the artist’s hallmarks; the song is about making it and what happens after. “Onome,” which follows right after, introduces her and what her brand is about and “Where You Dey,” are the EP‘s bookends. The 35 minutes EP is a combination of Afro-Rap, R&B and Pop, merged together to produce a lovely body of work; it’s obvious that a lot of experimenting and hard-work went into the EP.
